Caring for Your Dentures Made Easy

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

Taking care of your dentures is essential for keeping them in good shape and ensuring your mouth stays healthy. Dentures can replace missing teeth and improve your smile, but they require proper care to last long and function well. Good denture care involves regular cleaning, proper storage, and avoiding common mistakes that can damage them.

A simple daily routine can help keep your dentures clean and free from bacteria. This not only helps in maintaining their appearance but also prevents bad breath and gum disease. Keeping your dentures clean ensures that they remain comfortable to wear and do their job effectively.

Knowing how to store your dentures properly is also crucial. Proper storage helps them keep their shape and prevents them from drying out or becoming warped. Additionally, it's important to be aware of common mistakes that people make with their dentures, such as using the wrong cleaning products or neglecting to clean them regularly.

By following these easy steps and knowing when to seek professional help, you can keep your dentures in excellent condition. Let's dive into the simple and effective ways to care for your dentures and make sure they serve you well.

Daily Cleaning Routine for Dentures

Taking care of your dentures starts with a good cleaning routine. Just like natural teeth, dentures need to be cleaned daily to get rid of food particles, plaque, and stains. Here’s how you can keep your dentures in great shape:

First, remove your dentures and rinse them under running water to wash away loose food particles. You can use a soft brush, but avoid using regular toothpaste as it can be too abrasive. Instead, use a specially formulated denture cleaner. Gently brush all surfaces of the dentures, paying special attention to the grooves where plaque and food particles can hide.

Next, soak your dentures in a denture cleaning solution. Follow the instructions on the package to ensure you’re using it correctly. Soaking helps remove any remaining debris and keeps your dentures fresh. Don’t forget to rinse your dentures thoroughly under running water before putting them back in your mouth. This step is important to remove any chemicals from the cleaning solution that could irritate your gums.

Cleaning your mouth is just as essential. Brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth with a soft toothbrush to remove plaque and stimulate blood circulation. A healthy mouth helps support your dentures and makes them more comfortable to wear.

Proper Storage of Your Dentures

Proper storage of your dentures is essential to keep them in good condition. When you’re not wearing your dentures, it’s important to store them correctly to prevent drying, warping, or any damage.

Always keep your dentures moist when they’re not in use. This helps them retain their shape and fit comfortably in your mouth. You can do this by soaking them in water or a denture soaking solution. Make sure to use cool or lukewarm water, as hot water can warp the dentures. If you’re using a soaking solution, follow the instructions on the package to avoid damaging your dentures.

Use a sturdy, closed container to store your dentures when you’re not wearing them. This can protect them from accidental drops or damage. It’s also good idea to keep your storage container in a safe place out of reach of pets and children.

Regularly check your storage container for cleanliness. Wash it with soap and water to prevent any buildup of bacteria. Keeping both your dentures and their storage environment clean is key to maintaining good oral health and prolonging the life of your dentures.

By following these simple steps for cleaning and storing your dentures, you can ensure they stay in tiptop condition and continue to serve you well.

Common Mistakes to Avoid with Dentures

Even with the best intentions, people often make mistakes when caring for their dentures. Avoiding these common pitfalls can help keep your dentures in great shape and extend their lifespan.

One common mistake is using regular toothpaste to clean dentures. Toothpaste is often too abrasive for dentures and can scratch their surface. These scratches can collect bacteria and stains, making your dentures look less clean. Always use a cleaner specifically designed for dentures.

Another mistake is not removing and cleaning your dentures daily. Leaving them in your mouth overnight can cause bacteria to build up, leading to bad breath and gum infections. Always take your dentures out before bed and follow a good cleaning routine to keep them fresh.

Incorrect storage is another issue. Some people make the mistake of letting their dentures dry out. Dentures need to stay moist to retain their shape and fit well. Always store your dentures in water or a denture solution when you’re not wearing them.

Handling dentures roughly can also cause problems. Dropping them or using too much pressure while cleaning can cause cracks or breaks. Hold them over a soft towel or a sink filled with water to cushion any accidental drops.

When to Seek Professional Help for Denture Care

Knowing when to seek professional help for your dentures is crucial to maintaining their condition and ensuring your comfort. Sometimes, home care just isn’t enough, and professional assistance is needed.

Seek professional help if your dentures become loose or uncomfortable. Ill-fitting dentures can cause sores, irritation, and difficulty while eating or speaking. A dentist can adjust or reline them to improve the fit and comfort.

If you notice any cracks, chips, or other damage, it's important to see a dentist right away. Attempting to repair them yourself can cause further damage. Professional repairs ensure they are fixed correctly and safely.

Consult your dentist if you experience persistent bad breath or gum irritation despite following a good cleaning routine. These symptoms might indicate an underlying issue, such as an infection or improper fit, that needs professional attention.

Regular dental check-ups are also important, even if you don’t have natural teeth. Your dentist will check the health of your gums and the fit of your dentures, and they can provide professional cleanings to keep your dentures in the best condition.

Conclusion

Caring for your dentures is an essential part of maintaining your overall oral health. By establishing a daily cleaning routine, storing your dentures properly, and avoiding common mistakes, you can ensure your dentures last longer and stay in excellent condition. Knowing when to seek professional help is equally important to tackle any issues before they become severe.
