What to Expect During Your First Dental Visit

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

Visiting the dentist for the first time can be a bit intimidating, especially if you don’t know what to expect. At Valley View Dental, we aim to make your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Understanding the steps involved can help ease any anxiety and prepare you for a smooth visit. A first dental visit is not just about checking your teeth; it’s about getting to know you and your oral health needs.

The initial consultation is an important part of your visit. You will be asked to fill out medical history forms and discuss any dental concerns or goals you may have. This allows the dentist to understand your background and tailor the examination to your specific needs.

Following the consultation, a comprehensive dental examination is conducted. This includes a visual check of your teeth and gums as well as an oral cancer screening. Dental X-rays may also be taken to get a detailed look at your teeth and jaw. These steps help the dentist identify any issues that might not be visible to the naked eye.

With these preparations, you can look forward to a thorough and informative first dental visit. Remember, taking this step is crucial in maintaining a healthy and happy smile.

Initial Consultation and Paperwork

Filling Out Medical History Forms

When you visit us for the first time, you will need to fill out medical history forms. These forms are essential for understanding your overall health and any conditions that might affect your dental care. We ask about allergies, medications, past surgeries, and chronic illnesses. By knowing your medical background, we can tailor our treatments to your specific needs and avoid potential complications.

It's important to provide complete and accurate information. If you have diabetes, heart disease, or any other condition, please make sure to note it down. This helps us keep you safe and provide the best care possible. The more we know, the better we can plan your dental treatment.

Discussing Dental Concerns and Goals

After you finish the paperwork, you will meet with the dentist to discuss your dental concerns and goals. Here, you can talk about any pain, discomfort, or cosmetic issues you are experiencing. This is a great time to ask questions and share what you hope to achieve with your dental care.

Whether you want to fix a toothache, improve your smile, or just maintain good oral health, your input is crucial. Our goal is to understand your needs and develop a plan that meets your expectations. Open communication ensures that we provide the care you want and need.

Comprehensive Dental Examination

Visual Examination and Oral Cancer Screening

The dentist will first conduct a visual examination during your comprehensive dental examination. They will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth, checking for signs of cavities, gum disease, and other issues. This step helps identify problems that might not be visible to the untrained eye.

The dentist will also perform an oral cancer screening. This is a quick check to look for any abnormal areas in your mouth, such as sores, lumps, or discolored patches. Early detection of oral cancer can be life-saving, so this screening is vital to your exam.

Dental X-Rays and What They Reveal

Next, we will take dental X-rays to get a detailed look at your teeth and jawbone. X-rays help us see issues that are not visible during the visual exam. They can reveal problems like cavities between teeth, bone loss, impacted teeth, and infections.

These images give a complete picture of your oral health, allowing us to find and treat issues early. If we spot something concerning, we can discuss it with you and decide on the best treatment plan. Dental X-rays are a powerful tool in keeping your mouth healthy and preventing future problems.

Professional Cleaning Procedures

Removing Plaque and Tartar

The first step in professional cleaning is removing plaque and tartar. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If not cleaned off regularly, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. During your cleaning, a dental hygienist will use special tools to scrape away plaque and tartar from your teeth and around your gum line.

This process helps prevent cavities and gum disease by getting rid of harmful bacteria. Removing these buildups is crucial for keeping your mouth healthy. The hygienist will pay close attention to hard areas to reach with regular brushing and flossing, ensuring a thorough cleaning.

Polishing and Fluoride Treatment

After removing plaque and tartar, the next step is polishing your teeth. The hygienist will use a high-powered brush and a gritty toothpaste to scrub your teeth. This helps remove any remaining plaque and surface stains, making your teeth look shiny and clean.

Once your teeth are polished, you might also receive a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens the enamel, the outer layer of your teeth, and helps prevent cavities. The fluoride treatment usually involves applying a gel or foam to your teeth for a few minutes. This final step in the cleaning process provides an extra layer of protection for your teeth.

Treatment Plan and Next Steps

Discussing Findings and Recommendations

After your cleaning and examination, the dentist will discuss their findings with you. They will explain any issues they discover, such as cavities, gum disease, or other dental problems. You'll learn about the state of your oral health and what needs attention.

Based on these findings, the dentist will recommend treatments. This might include fillings, crowns, deep cleanings, or other procedures. It's also a great time to ask any questions you have about your oral health or the recommended treatments. Understanding your treatment plan helps you make informed decisions about your dental care.
