How Invisalign Can Help Straighten Your Teeth

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

Everyone deserves a smile they feel confident about. If your teeth are crooked or misaligned, you might feel self-conscious when you smile or talk. Traditional braces can fix these issues, but they are quite noticeable and can be uncomfortable. That’s where Invisalign comes in.

Invisalign is a modern solution for straightening your teeth without the need for metal braces. It uses clear, removable aligners that are nearly invisible. These aligners are custom-made for your teeth and gradually move them into their proper position. The best part is that most people won’t even know you're wearing them, making it a great option for anyone worried about their appearance during treatment.

Invisalign offers many advantages beyond just being discreet. The aligners are removable, so you can eat your favorite foods and maintain your normal oral hygiene routines without any hassle. Plus, they are designed to be comfortable, minimizing irritation to your gums and cheeks. At Valley View Dental, we're excited to share with you how Invisalign can help you achieve the straight, beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

What Is Invisalign and How Does It Work?

Invisalign is an advanced orthodontic treatment designed to straighten your teeth using clear, removable aligners. Instead of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of custom-made aligner trays that fit snugly over your teeth. These aligners are made from a smooth, clear plastic that is almost invisible, making them a popular choice for teens and adults alike.

The treatment works by applying gentle, controlled pressure to your teeth, gradually shifting them into their desired positions. You’ll receive a new set of aligners every one to two weeks, each one slightly different from the last. These small adjustments over time result in the movement of your teeth.

A dentist or orthodontist will create a unique treatment plan for you based on digital scans or impressions of your teeth. This means the aligners are tailored to your specific needs, offering a more precise and effective treatment. The aligners must be worn for about 20 to 22 hours a day, but you can remove them for eating, brushing, and flossing.

Benefits of Using Invisalign for Teeth Straightening

There are many benefits to choosing Invisalign over traditional braces. Here’s a list of why Invisalign might be the best option for you:

  • Nearly Invisible: The clear aligners are hard to notice, so you can straighten your teeth without drawing attention to your mouth.

  • Comfortable: Made from smooth plastic, Invisalign aligners are more comfortable to wear than metal braces, which can irritate your gums and cheeks.

  • Removable: You can easily take out your aligners for meals and oral hygiene, making it easier to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

  • No food restrictions: Since the aligners are removable, you can eat all your favorite foods without worrying about damaging braces.

  • Fewer Office Visits: Invisalign typically requires fewer visits to the dentist compared to traditional braces, as you receive multiple sets of aligners in advance.

  • Improved Oral Health: Being able to brush and floss normally helps keep your mouth clean and can lead to better overall dental health.

These benefits make Invisalign an excellent option for those looking to straighten their teeth without the drawbacks of traditional braces.

The Invisalign Treatment Process Step-by-Step

Starting your Invisalign treatment can seem like a big step, but it's actually pretty straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step look at what you can expect:

  • Initial Consultation: Your first step is to visit your dentist or orthodontist for a consultation. They will check your teeth and determine if Invisalign is a good fit for you. If it is, they will take digital scans or impressions of your teeth.

  • Customized Treatment Plan: Using these scans, a custom treatment plan will be created just for you. This plan will show how your teeth will gradually move and give an estimate of how long treatment will take.

  • Receiving Your Aligners: Once your aligners are ready, you’ll get a series of sets to take home. Each set of aligners will need to be worn for about one to two weeks. Remember, you should wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day for the best results.

  • Regular Check-Ups: You’ll have regular appointments with your dentist to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments. These check-ups are usually every six to eight weeks.

  • Final Aligners and Retainers: Once your teeth have moved into their new positions, you’ll receive your final set of aligners. To ensure your teeth stay in their new locations, you may need to wear retainers, especially at night.

Tips for Maintaining Your Invisalign Aligners

Keeping your Invisalign aligners clean and well-maintained is crucial for their effectiveness. Here are some tips to help you take good care of them:

  • Clean Your Aligners Daily: Rinse your aligners each time you take them out and before putting them back in. Use a soft toothbrush and clear, antibacterial soap to gently clean them. Avoid using toothpaste, as it can be abrasive and scratch the aligners.

  • Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks: Try to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your aligners, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and soda. If you do consume these, rinse your mouth and aligners with water before reinserting them.

  • Store Properly When Not in Use: Always store your aligners in their case when you’re not wearing them. This keeps them clean and prevents loss or damage.

  • Handle with Care: When removing your aligners, use both hands to gently ease them out. This helps avoid unnecessary twisting or bending that could damage them.

  • Brush and floss regularly. Good oral hygiene is essential. Brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back in to prevent food particles and plaque from getting trapped.
