The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.
Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.
Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.
Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.
At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.
Getting braces is an important step toward achieving a healthy and beautiful smile. While the end result is exciting, the process can sometimes be challenging. Knowing what to expect and how to handle those challenges can make your braces experience much smoother and more enjoyable.
Braces can cause some discomfort, especially in the first few days after they are placed or adjusted. Here are some tips to help you manage any pain and stay as comfortable as possible.
Use orthodontic wax: If the wires or brackets are irritating your cheeks or gums, orthodontic wax can be a lifesaver. Just put a small piece of wax over the troublesome area to protect your mouth. This will reduce friction and make you more comfortable.
Rinse with Salt Water: A simple saltwater rinse can help soothe sore spots in your mouth. Mix one teaspoon of salt with a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth several times a day.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers: If you’re experiencing more severe discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help. Always follow the instructions on the package and check with your dentist if you're unsure.
Eat Soft Foods: Soft foods are easier on your braces and can help minimize discomfort. Foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and smoothies are gentle on your teeth and gums.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps keep your mouth clean and reduces the risk of irritation. Plus, it helps prevent dry mouth, which can make discomfort worse.
By following these tips, you can reduce soreness and ensure a more pleasant braces experience.
Eating with braces requires some adjustments, but it doesn’t mean giving up all your favorite foods. Knowing what’s safe to eat can help you avoid any damage to your braces.
Foods to Enjoy:
1. Soft Fruits: Bananas, berries, and melons are gentle on your braces.
2. Dairy: Yogurt, cheese, and pudding are great choices and easy to chew.
3. Cooked Vegetables: Steamed or boiled veggies like carrots and broccoli are soft and nutritious.
4. Soft Proteins: Eggs, tofu, and soft-cooked meats are protein-rich and braces-friendly.
5. Grains: Rice, pasta, and soft bread are easy to eat and won’t harm your braces.
Foods to Avoid:
1. Sticky Foods: gum, caramel, and taffy can get stuck in your braces and are hard to remove.
2. Hard foods: nuts, popcorn, and hard candies can bend wires and break brackets.
3. Chewy Foods: Bagels, crusty bread, and tough meats put too much pressure on your braces.
4. Crunchy Foods: Raw carrots, apples, and corn on the cob are difficult to eat with braces. Opt for softer alternatives or cut them into smaller pieces.
5. Sugary Foods and Drinks: Soda, candy, and other sugary treats increase the risk of decay around your braces.
Stick to these food guidelines to keep your braces in good shape and your treatment on track. Enjoying the right foods ensures that your braces journey is as smooth as possible.
Keeping your teeth clean is extra important when you have braces. Food particles can easily get stuck in the brackets and wires, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Here’s how to keep your braces and teeth clean and healthy.
Brush After Every Meal: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle the brush to reach around brackets and wires. Aim for at least two minutes of brushing, covering all surfaces of your teeth and braces.
Floss Daily: Use special orthodontic floss or a floss threader to get between your teeth and under the wires. This helps remove trapped food particles and plaque that your toothbrush might miss.
Rinse with Mouthwash: An antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce plaque and prevent gum inflammation. Choose a fluoride rinse to strengthen your teeth and protect against decay.
Regular Dental Visits: Keep up with your regular check-ups and cleanings. Your dentist will make sure your teeth are staying healthy and give your braces a thorough cleaning.
Use Interdental Brushes: These small brushes can help clean between brackets and under wires. They can reach spots that are hard to get with a regular toothbrush.
By following these steps, you can keep your mouth healthy and make sure your orthodontic treatment progresses as planned.
Wearing braces doesn’t have to be boring. There are lots of fun ways to make your braces reflect your unique style. Here are some ideas to personalize your braces and make them a part of your look.
Get Creative with Color: Many orthodontists offer colored bands that go around the brackets. You can choose your favorite colors, match your outfit, or celebrate holidays and seasons with different shades.
Add Decals: Some orthodontic offices provide small decals that can be placed on the brackets. They come in various shapes and designs, adding a fun touch to your smile.
Mix and Match: Don’t feel limited to one color. Create patterns, like alternating colors or doing rainbow braces. Mixing and matching can make your braces more exciting.
Try Different Bands: If you play sports or have a favorite team, you can use bands in your team’s colors. Change them out for special events or just for fun.
Show Off Your Hobbies: Whether it’s your school’s colors, your favorite animal, or something else you love, use your braces to showcase your interests.
Expressing yourself through your braces can make the experience more enjoyable. It helps you feel confident and happy with your treatment process.
