How Sealants Protect Your Child's Teeth

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

As a parent, you want to do everything you can to protect your child's teeth. Dental sealants are a great way to prevent cavities and keep your child's smile healthy. They are a simple, pain-free method that can make a big difference in your child’s dental health.

Dental sealants are thin coatings that cover the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These back teeth, or molars, are where cavities are most likely to form. Even with good brushing habits, it can be hard to clean every nook and cranny of these teeth. Sealants create a protective barrier that blocks out food and bacteria, significantly reducing the risk of decay.

Getting sealants is a quick and easy procedure that can be done during a regular dental visit. It involves applying a liquid coating that hardens into a protective shield over the molars. This shield can last for several years and provides an added layer of defense against cavities.

In this article, we will discuss what dental sealants are, how they work, the benefits they offer for your child’s teeth, the application process, and how to care for teeth with sealants. By understanding these aspects, you can make an informed decision and take proactive steps to protect your child’s dental health.

What Are Dental Sealants, and How Do They Work?

Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, or molars. These teeth have grooves and pits where food particles and bacteria can easily get stuck, even if you brush and floss well. Sealants act as a barrier, preventing cavities and tooth decay.

The sealant material is usually made of plastic or other dental materials. When applied to the teeth, it flows into the grooves and pits, then hardens quickly under a special light. Once hardened, the sealant forms a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth.

Sealants don’t change the way your child eats or drinks. They are clear or tooth-colored, so they blend in naturally with your child’s teeth. This makes them an easy and effective way to protect against cavities without affecting your child’s daily habits. By blocking out food and bacteria, sealants make it less likely for cavities to form, especially in those hard-to-reach areas.

The Benefits of Sealants for Children's Teeth

Sealants offer a range of benefits for your child’s dental health. Here are some of the key advantages:

  • Cavity Prevention: The main benefit of sealants is their ability to prevent cavities. By covering the chewing surfaces of molars, sealants block food particles and bacteria from settling into the grooves and pits where cavities typically form.

  • Quick and Painless Application: Applying sealants is fast and pain-free. It can be done during a regular dental visit and usually takes only a few minutes per tooth. There’s no need for drilling or removing any tooth structure.

  • Long-Lasting Protection: Sealants can last several years before needing a touch-up. They provide long-term protection against tooth decay, reducing the risk of cavities and the need for fillings or other dental treatments.

  • Cost-effective: Preventing cavities with sealants can save money in the long run. Treating cavities can be more costly and time-consuming than applying sealants. Investing in sealants now can reduce the need for more complex procedures later.

  • Easy Maintenance: Once sealants are applied, they require little extra maintenance. Your child can continue with their regular brushing and flossing routine. However, it’s still important to visit the dentist regularly to check the condition of the sealants.

Sealants are a simple, effective way to protect your child’s teeth from cavities. By adding this layer of protection, you are helping to ensure your child maintains a healthy, happy smile.

The Process of Applying Sealants: What to Expect

Applying sealants is a straightforward and pain-free process. Here’s what to expect when your child gets sealants:

  • Cleaning the Teeth: First, the dental hygienist will clean the teeth that will receive the sealants. This step removes any plaque and food particles from the surface, ensuring the sealant adheres properly.

  • Drying the Teeth: After cleaning, the teeth are dried, and cotton rolls or a special shield are placed around them to keep them dry during the procedure.

  • Applying an Acidic Gel: A mild acidic gel is then applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This gel helps roughen up the surface, making it easier for the sealant to bond to the tooth. After a few seconds, the gel is rinsed off, and the teeth are dried again.

  • Applying the Sealant: The dentist or hygienist will paint the liquid sealant onto the chewing surfaces of the teeth. The sealant flows into the grooves and pits, creating a protective barrier.

  • Hardening the Sealant: A special blue light is used to harden the sealant quickly. This light helps the sealant form a strong and durable shield over the tooth's surface.

  • Final Check: Finally, the dentist will check the sealant to ensure it has properly hardened and is covering the tooth correctly. Your child can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.

How to Care for Teeth with Sealants

Caring for teeth with sealants is simple and involves continuing good oral hygiene habits. Follow these tips to keep your child’s teeth healthy and ensure their sealants last as long as possible:

  • Brush Twice a Day: Make sure your child brushes their teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Good brushing habits help keep all teeth, including those with sealants, clean and free from plaque.

  • Floss Daily: Flossing is important to remove food particles and plaque from between the teeth and around the gumline. Teach your child to floss daily to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

  • Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods: While sealants provide a protective barrier, it’s still a good idea to avoid very hard or sticky foods that could damage the sealants. Encourage your child to chew carefully and avoid using their teeth as tools.

  • Regular Dental Check-Ups: Schedule regular dental check-ups so the dentist can monitor the condition of the sealants and check for any signs of wear or damage. The dentist can reapply or touch up sealants as needed.

  • Healthy Diet: Maintaining a balanced diet with limited sugary snacks and drinks can help protect your child’s teeth. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water and eat nutritious foods to support overall dental health.

By following these tips, you can help ensure your child’s sealants stay effective and their teeth remain healthy and protected.
