The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.
Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.
Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.
Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.
At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.
A beautiful smile is a great asset. It not only boosts your confidence but also reflects your overall health. At Valley View Dental, we believe that everyone deserves a radiant smile. The journey to achieving it involves more than just occasional brushing; it requires a combination of good daily habits, nutritious foods, and preventive care.
Maintaining a healthy smile starts with understanding the basics. Simple actions like brushing and flossing correctly and visiting the dentist regularly can make a big difference. But beyond that, there are advanced dental procedures that can enhance the appearance of your teeth and give you that extra sparkle.
Taking care of your teeth starts with brushing and flossing. Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use short, gentle strokes. Make sure to cover all the surfaces of your teeth, including the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces. Don't forget to brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
Flossing is just as important as brushing because it removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. Use about 18 inches of floss, winding most of it around your middle fingers. Gently slide the floss between your teeth, curving it into a C shape around each tooth and under the gumline. Move the floss up and down, and use a fresh section for each tooth.
Regular dental checkups are crucial for maintaining a healthy smile. Visit your dentist at least twice a year for a professional cleaning and examination. During these visits, your dentist will remove plaque and tartar buildup that you can't clean with your toothbrush and floss alone. They will also check for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues that may not be visible or causing pain yet.
If you’re looking to brighten your smile, there are several teeth-whitening options available. Over-the-counter whitening strips and gels can lighten teeth by a few shades, but for more dramatic results, professional whitening treatments are the way to go. At Valley View Dental, we offer in-office whitening that can make your teeth several shades whiter in just one visit. We use high-concentration whitening agents that safely and effectively remove deep stains.
Another option is take-home whitening kits provided by our dental office. These kits include custom-made trays and professional-grade whitening gel. With the guidance of your dentist, you can achieve a brighter smile in a couple of weeks by using these at home.
Cosmetic dentistry goes beyond whitening and offers a range of treatments to enhance your smile. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin that cover the front surfaces of your teeth. They can change the color, shape, size, or length of your teeth, giving you a flawless smile.
Bonding is another cosmetic procedure where tooth-colored resin is applied and hardened with a special light. This can repair chipped, cracked, or discolored teeth. Contouring and reshaping are used to correct minor imperfections, like uneven teeth or slight overlaps.
For more extensive improvements, dental crowns and bridges can restore the appearance and function of damaged or missing teeth. Crowns cover and protect weakened teeth, while bridges fill gaps left by missing teeth. With these advanced dental procedures, you can achieve the smile you’ve always wanted.
What you eat affects your teeth and gums. Foods rich in calcium and phosphorus, like milk, cheese, and yogurt, help strengthen tooth enamel. Crunchy fruits and vegetables, like apples, carrots, and celery, act as natural toothbrushes by stimulating your gums and increasing saliva production, which cleans away food particles and neutralizes acids.
Eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals to support overall oral health. Leafy greens like spinach and kale are high in calcium and folic acid, which improve gum health. Nuts and seeds, particularly almonds, are great for teeth because they provide essential nutrients while being low in sugar. Drinking plenty of water also helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth hydrated.
Some foods and drinks can harm your teeth. Sugary snacks and beverages, like candy, soda, and even fruit juices, feed harmful bacteria in your mouth that cause cavities. Sticky foods, such as dried fruits or caramel, linger on your teeth longer and increase the risk of decay.
Acidic foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits and vinegar, can erode your tooth enamel over time. Limit your consumption of these items, and when you do enjoy them, rinse your mouth with water afterward to neutralize the acids. Additionally, avoid excessive consumption of starchy foods like bread and chips that can get stuck in your teeth and lead to plaque buildup.
Certain habits can negatively affect your oral health. Smoking is one of the worst offenders, as it leads to gum disease, tooth discoloration, and even oral cancer. Quitting smoking can significantly improve the health and appearance of your smile. Similarly, try to avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pens, as this can crack your teeth.
Reducing soda and alcohol consumption is also important. Both can harm your teeth by eroding enamel and increasing the risk of cavities. Instead, opt for water or milk, which are better for your oral health. If you must have soda or alcohol, use a straw to limit contact with your teeth and rinse your mouth with water afterward.
Achieving and maintaining a beautiful smile involves a combination of good daily habits, a balanced diet, regular dental visits, and a healthy lifestyle. By incorporating these practices into your routine, you can protect your oral health and enjoy a radiant smile. From proper brushing and flossing techniques to advanced dental procedures and making smart dietary choices, every step counts towards a brighter smile.
Lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and managing stress, can also have a big impact on your teeth and gums.
