Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

What you eat can have a big impact on your teeth. Some foods help keep your teeth strong and healthy. By including the right foods in your diet, you can protect your teeth from decay and keep your smile bright. It's not just about brushing and flossing; your diet plays a key role too.

Leafy greens and vegetables are fantastic for your teeth. They are full of vitamins that strengthen your teeth and gums. Dairy products like milk and cheese also make your teeth strong by providing them with the calcium they need. Nuts and seeds are another great choice, offering natural protection. They might be small, but they are packed with nutrients to keep your teeth in good shape.

Eating the right foods is like giving your teeth a special treatment. Along with regular dental care, a healthy diet can help you maintain strong teeth. This means fewer cavities and a healthier mouth overall. Let's dive into the best foods for strong teeth and how they can make a difference in your oral health.

Foods That Promote Strong Teeth and Gums

1. Leafy Greens and Vegetables for Dental Health

Eating leafy greens and vegetables is one of the best ways to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli are packed with vitamins and minerals that help your teeth and gums stay in top shape. These greens are high in calcium, which is vital for maintaining strong teeth. Calcium helps rebuild the enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth that protects them from decay.

These vegetables are also rich in folic acid, a type of B vitamin that has numerous health benefits. Folic acid can help reduce gum inflammation and support healthy tissue growth. This makes leafy greens an excellent choice for those who want to prevent gum disease and keep their gums healthy.

Crunchy vegetables like carrots, celery, and cucumbers act as natural toothbrushes. When you chew them, they help scrub the surfaces of your teeth, removing food particles and bacteria. This extra cleaning action helps keep your teeth clean between brushing.

Plus, these vegetables increase saliva production, which is your mouth’s natural defense against cavities and gum disease. Saliva neutralizes acids produced by bacteria and washes away food particles, keeping your mouth clean and fresh.

Including a variety of leafy greens and crunchy vegetables in your diet is a simple and tasty way to protect your teeth and gums. Make these foods a regular part of your meals to enjoy their dental benefits.

2. Dairy Products That Strengthen Teeth

Dairy products are another excellent choice for strong teeth. Foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt are rich in calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and bones. Calcium is especially important because it strengthens the enamel, making your teeth more resistant to decay. When you consume dairy products, you help replenish the minerals your teeth lose throughout the day.

Cheese in particular is very beneficial for your teeth. It contains casein, a protein that strengthens the tooth enamel. Eating cheese also increases saliva production, which helps wash away food particles and neutralize harmful acids in your mouth. A piece of cheese at the end of a meal can help protect your teeth and reduce the risk of cavities.

Yogurt is another great option, especially if it is low in sugar. It is packed with calcium, probiotics, and vitamins that promote healthy teeth and gums. Probiotics, or good bacteria, help fight off the bad bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Make sure to choose plain yogurt or one with minimal added sugars to get the most benefit without the risk of tooth decay.

Incorporating dairy products into your diet is an easy way to support your dental health. Whether you enjoy a glass of milk, a slice of cheese, or a cup of yogurt, these foods provide essential nutrients that help keep your teeth strong and healthy.

3. Nuts and Seeds: Natural Teeth Protectors

Nuts and seeds are small but powerful when it comes to keeping your teeth strong. They are rich in essential nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous, which are crucial for maintaining healthy teeth. These minerals help strengthen your tooth enamel and protect against tooth decay.

Almonds are a great choice because they are high in calcium and protein while being low in sugar. Eating a handful of almonds can give you the benefits of these nutrients without harming your teeth. Walnuts are also excellent as they contain fiber, folic acid, and iron, which support overall oral health.

Seeds like chia seeds and sesame seeds are packed with calcium and micronutrients that help maintain strong teeth. Chia seeds are especially rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties that can help keep your gums healthy. Sesame seeds can also help reduce plaque and buildup on your teeth, acting as a natural scrubber while you chew.

Including a variety of nuts and seeds in your daily diet can offer natural protection to your teeth. They are easy to incorporate into meals or enjoy as a snack, making it simple to boost your dental health with these nutrient-rich foods.

4. Foods Rich in Vitamins and Minerals for Strong Teeth

Eating foods that are high in vitamins and minerals is key to maintaining strong teeth. Vitamins like Vitamin C and D, along with minerals like calcium and phosphorous, play a big role in keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Vitamin C is essential for gum health. It helps keep the gums strong, protects against gum disease, and supports the healing process. Fruits like oranges, strawberries, and kiwis are rich in vitamin C. Including these fruits in your diet can help prevent gum issues and keep your gums healthy.

Foods rich in vitamin D help your body absorb calcium more effectively. Fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, eggs, and fortified milk are excellent sources of Vitamin D. These foods help ensure that the calcium you consume is utilized properly to strengthen your teeth and bones.

Minerals like calcium and phosphorous are vital for the health of your teeth. Foods such as leafy greens, dairy products, nuts, and seeds provide these essential minerals. Together, they help keep the tooth enamel strong and protect against decay.

Eating a balanced diet that includes these vitamins and minerals ensures your teeth get the support they need to stay strong and healthy.
