The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.
Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.
Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.
Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.
At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.
Keeping your smile bright and healthy doesn't have to be hard. In 2024, there are simple steps you can follow to ensure your teeth look their best. A beautiful smile can boost your confidence and make a great impression.
Daily oral hygiene is the first step to a bright smile. Brushing and flossing your teeth properly can prevent cavities and keep your gums healthy. It's also important to choose the right foods. Some foods help keep your teeth strong, while others can cause problems.
Regular check-ups with your dentist will help catch any issues early. Dentists can clean your teeth thoroughly and give you tips on how to improve your oral care routine. And if you're looking to enhance your smile, there are many cosmetic treatments available today. Whitening treatments and veneers can make a big difference in how your smile looks.
Let's dive into these top tips to help you maintain a bright and beautiful smile throughout the year.
Proper brushing techniques are important for keeping your teeth clean. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Move the brush in small, circular motions. Brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces. Spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth twice a day.
Flossing shouldn't be skipped. Flossing removes plaque and food particles between your teeth that a toothbrush can't reach. Use about 18 inches of floss and wind it around your fingers. Slide the floss gently between your teeth. Curve it into a C shape against one tooth and slide it up and down. Repeat for all your teeth, including the back ones.
Mouthwash can offer additional benefits. It reaches places your toothbrush and floss might miss. It helps reduce plaque and gingivitis. Look for a mouthwash with fluoride. Rinse for 30 seconds after brushing and flossing.
Some foods help keep your teeth strong. Cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products contain calcium, which is good for your teeth. Leafy greens like spinach and kale are high in vitamins and minerals. Apples and carrots can scrub your teeth as you eat them. Nuts provide essential nutrients and promote saliva production.
Certain foods and drinks can harm your smile. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks like candy and soda. They can lead to cavities. Sticky foods like caramel and dried fruit can get stuck in your teeth. Acidic foods and drinks like citrus fruits and coffee can erode tooth enamel over time.
Moderation and substitution can help. If you enjoy sweet treats, try eating them with a meal instead of alone. Drink water after consuming acidic foods to help rinse away acids. Choose whole fruits instead of sugary snacks. Swap soda for water or milk. Making small changes can have a big impact on your oral health.
A routine dental visit involves several steps to ensure your oral health is in top shape. First, a dental hygienist will clean your teeth thoroughly. They will remove plaque and tartar, which are hard to get rid of by brushing and flossing alone. Next, they will polish your teeth, leaving them smooth and shiny. The dentist will then examine your teeth and gums for any signs of problems, such as cavities or gum disease. They may take X-rays to get a more detailed look at your teeth.
Early detection and prevention are crucial because they help avoid bigger problems later. Regular check-ups can catch cavities before they become severe. They can also identify gum disease early, which is easier to treat. Preventive care saves time, money, and discomfort. It helps keep your smile healthy and bright year-round.
You should visit the dentist at least twice a year for check-ups. However, some people might need to go more often, such as those with gum disease or a history of frequent cavities. Your dentist will advise you on how often you should come in based on your unique needs.
There are many cosmetic dental options to enhance your smile. Teeth whitening treatments are very popular. They can remove stains and make your teeth several shades whiter. Whitening can be done in the dental office or at home with a kit your dentist provides.
Veneers and bonding are other ways to improve your smile. Veneers are thin shells placed over the front of your teeth. They can correct a range of issues, such as gaps, chips, and discoloration. Bonding involves applying a tooth-colored resin to repair damaged or discolored teeth. Both treatments are effective for creating a more attractive smile.
Cosmetic dentistry has seen many innovations in 2024. There are newer, more effective whitening solutions available. These treatments work faster and provide longer-lasting results. Advances in veneer technology make them more natural-looking and durable. Digital imaging allows for a better fit and appearance. These innovations make it easier than ever to achieve a bright smile.
Maintaining a bright smile in 2024 involves a mix of daily care, smart food choices, regular dental check-ups, and cosmetic treatments if needed. Simple steps like proper brushing, flossing, eating healthy foods, and visiting the dentist can make a big difference. If you're looking to enhance your smile, there are many advanced cosmetic options available.
A beautiful smile boosts your confidence and overall well-being. Remember that prevention and early detection are key to avoiding more serious dental problems. Follow these tips to keep your smile bright and healthy this year.
